How to Get Published

For those of us who aren’t famous, here are three basic ways to get published:

1. The Query Route:
Write an excellent query letter.
Research agents and editors to find a good fit.
Send it according to the recipient’s preferences (email or snail mail). If you’re looking for help with this, I’ve heard good things about www.publishersandagents.net, but have not used them myself.
Then just wait and hope someone bites. Chin up! I do know authors who’ve found their agents and editors this way.

2. The Contest Route:
Enter your writing in a contest. Why? Besides the feather in your cap, which will help you with the other routes, sometimes prizes include:
Getting to hob-nob with agents and editors (if it’s a conference contest).
Winning the services of an agent.
Winning publication (for example, Midge Raymond’s excellent Forgetting English was published by EWU Press through their Spokane Prize for Short Fiction).

3. The Conference Route:
Pitch to agents and editors at writing conferences.
If they ask you to send your stuff, you may write “Requested Materials Enclosed” on your correspondence, thereby avoiding the dreaded slush pile.
I went with the conference route, attending Book Passage Travel Writers Conference, Whidbey Island Writers Conference, and PNWA Conference between 2005 and 2007. I honed my proposal and pitch at each conference and ultimately found my agent at PNWA.
